Re:Module 3 DQ 1

How does the role of your chair differ from the role of instructors in previous classes you have taken?

With regards to the role of my chair differing from the role of the instructors from previous classes, the first item I noticed is that I have had phone contact with my chair in the first week of class, and I will continue to have more access to my chair during this process.  With regards to grading and feedback the duration for getting assignments back is a bit longer if it is a major dissertation deliverable.  Other duties include setting up the LDP for me to use as well as my committee, and she will be responsible for attending required monthly master chair meeting, completing all needed forms, and coordinating my defense calls (GCUa).

How is your role different?

My role is different in that I will be using other forms of communication besides the electronic forums.  I am required to create and edit my goals and timeline for my own individual success plan and follow the Milestone Guide provided on the DC Network (GCUb).  As with all of my classes, it is my responsibility to follow instructions for completing assignments and turning them in to the proper places and people.

Are these roles different than you expected? Why or why not?

As far as the assignments and correspondences they are pretty much what I expected.  What I am still not sure of is when I start submitting papers directly to the LDP as opposed to LC, or if at this point I am submitting to both?  I watched a power point on the LDP, but found it more confusing than helpful.

I am excited to be working with a chair and a committee that will see me through this process.  Developing a symbiotic relationship with these people, whom have all been through this process, will be the only way I can get through this journey.  Keeping the lines of communication open will allow me to work my way towards the end goal.

Knowing that professional difference of opinion or conflict is inevitable on dissertation committees, how will you leverage these to improve creativity?

Differences of opinions are great ways to learn.  I know that I have not been through this process before and I have to trust those that have to help me and encourage me.  Likewise, when I am frustrated, I need to let them know what is frustrating me and that they are there to help me through it.  Of the two committee members I have met so far, I am extremely excited about having them on my team and I look forward to their council and guidance.
