BIOL 410 Term Paper, Fall 2020

This document contains (1) instructions for writing your term paper, (2) a few tips on writing, and (3) an example of a correctly written term paper.

The format, organization, and content specified in these instructions and example are not optional – you are required to follow all of them. Any departure from the format, required content, or organization given here, no matter how minor, will cost you points. MAKE YOUR PAPER LOOK LIKE THE EXAMPLE!!!

Do your own work. Copying and pasting and similar techniques are plagiarism and will be considered academic dishonesty.

Organization of paper:

1.     The paper is to be typed, using Times New Roman font, font size 12, and 1.5 line spacing (as in this paragraph). Insert page numbers on the bottom of each page of the report itself. You must turn in this paper as a hardcopy manuscript, i.e., not electronically

2.     Start with a title page that has the title, your name, and BIOL 410 Fall 2020.

3.     The second page is your abstract. An abstract is a summary of your paper, not to exceed one page in length.

4.     Identify each species and subspecies mentioned in your paper by its scientific names (e.g. Quercus virginiana, Panthera tigris sumatrae ) and, if it has one, its common English name (e.g. Southern Live Oak, Sumatran Tiger) at least once each in your paper. Be sure to write these properly. You may use either the scientific or English common name at your discretion elsewhere. After you have used a scientific name for the first time in a paragraph, you may abbreviate it elsewhere in the paragraph except at the beginning of a sentence. The definite article “the” can be placed before common names but not before scientific names, which are to be treated as proper nouns. For example, one would write “The American Black Bear is rarely seen in southern Louisiana,” “American Black Bears are omnivores,” “Ursus americanus is rarely seen in southern Louisiana”, and “Ursus americanus hibernate in winter.” Common names of species and subspecies must be capitalized.

5.     Insert figures (range maps, pictures of animals, etc.) to enhance the paper. In particular, insert a figure for every species mentioned in your report. Color illustrations are nice, but black and white figures are acceptable.

6.     You must use at least five independent references. Internet references are acceptable (Wikipedia, IUCN Red Book entries, etc.), as long as they are independent. Your references should include at least two refereed scientific papers from journals.

7.     Assertions of fact in your text must be referenced using Harvard referencing. A paper, book, or website with one author is cited by last name and year. If there are two authors cite both names, if there are three or more, use the first author and et al. (from et alii, “and the others”). Examples:

Meyer (2009) described Milnesium tardigrdum from lichens collected in British Columbia, Oklahoma, and Texas. Crawfish are good eating (Johnson 1948), Meyer and Hinton (2009) described a new South African species of tardigrade. Minibiotus fallax is only found in the southern United States and Australia (Hinton and Meyer 2007). Van Smeter et al. (1986) were the first to note the alarming decline in Bigfoot sightings.  The Yeti will become extinct soon unless protective measures are enacted (Bouedreaux et al. 2000). Cite and reference anonymous web sites by their title, as in the example below.

8.     You may use direct quotation from a source no more than twice; such a quotation may not exceed three sentences in length.

9.     A separate alphabetical References Cited must be appended to the end of the report (as in the example below).

10.  Length of the paper is up to you – at a minimum four to five pages (1000-1200 words) of text (exclusive of references)..
