Music Video

What is the visual design of a music video? First, watch the following two videos to help inspire your work in this project: Patrick H Willems – David Fincher & the Craft of Music Videos (video essay): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=esIFZnJqYow Tom Scott – If Educational Videos Were Filmed Like Music Videos: If Educational Videos Were Filmed Like Music Videos Your task is to produce a document that analyzes a music video for its visual design, including its mise-en-scène and editing. Dr. Sky defines analysis as description + evaluation = analysis. This means you will be evaluating the music video based on the following primary question: how do the various visual elements of the video support the music or artist? Your document should follow these guidelines: 1) The organization of your document should be as follows: -the URL link to the video at the top of the page -75 to 125 words: a short introduction paragraph summarizing the music video -100 to 150 words: a paragraph analyzing the video’s use of mise-en-scène (including composition, camera movement, cinematography, and special effects) -100 to 150 words: a paragraph analyzing the video’s use of editing -75 to 125 words: a short concluding paragraph offering an overall evaluation of the video’s visual design 2) The document should include two to five screenshots from the music video that help explain specific points of your analysis. You may add these in the middle of your document wherever it seems the most appropriate, or you may add them at the end of the document (but be sure to reference them in your analysis with something like [see figure 1]). You will be graded on the quality of the screenshots (their resolution, size, and how they relate to your analysis). 3) The analysis should use ample terms from the relevant lectures or readings. Please bold those terms in your document so Dr. Sky can easily locate them. Improper use of the terms will lead to a reduced grade. 3) The document should be downloaded or saved as a PDF document. 4) The document should be created with a college-level attention to professionalism and effort. Low effort or less than professional-appearing projects will receive a reduced score (as judged by Dr. Sky). If there is any doubt in your mind about your project’s level of professionalism and apparent effort, simply show Dr. Sky your project so that he can give you feedback before the deadline. Grading: Your project will be graded out of 50 points (out of the course total of 1000) based on the following criteria: the use of terms from lectures and readings in the analysis, creativity and brilliance of the argument/analysis, assignment requirements, professionalism, and the quality of the screenshots.
