MUS 2030: Music Appreciation Assignment #5: Music in Movies Remember, no late work accepted. Purpose In chapter 9 we consider the purpose and role of music in the movies we watch. This assignment will ask you to consider the music in a movie of your choice, and then apply concepts from Chapter 9. Movie Selection You may choose any feature-length (over 1 hour) film. You can watch it in the theatre or in your dorm room, but it might be easier if you can pause it to take notes. I strongly recommend watching the entire movie for the best understanding of this project. Content to include ◠Opening paragraph: ○ Name the movie and the year of its release ○ Name the composer(s) of the music in the movie. The end-credits will provide this information in detail, or you can look online. ◠Then: Choose 3-4 musical moments during the movie to discuss in detail. These may include the opening credits, the ending credits, a theme song, or any significant/important scene(s). Each musical moment should be its own paragraph and will include: ○ When does the music take place during the movie? Is it a theme that is used multiple times or in multiple moments? ○ Who is performing? Soloist/band/choir/orchestra? ○ What instruments are involved? Orchestra/band/electronic sounds? ○ Who is singing? Name them, or describe their voice. ○ Describe the music. This should be multiple sentences and include things such as tempo/rhythm, key, dynamics, texture, mood it creates, etc. This is where you will use the new Italian musical terms we discussed in Chapter 8. ○ How does the music affect this moment in the movie? Does it change the mood? Set the scene? Warn of what is coming? Create suspense? Heighten the emotions? Etc…. ◠Your final paragraph should be a conclusion. After watching the whole movie, what have you realized about the music and its role/function/purpose in the movie?
