MUS 2030: Music Appreciation Performance Reviews

MUS 2030: Music Appreciation Performance Reviews Purpose Live performance provides a different opportunity to experience music than any recording or video. Students will demonstrate a growing understanding of the music they hear, practice using the terms we have covered in class, and expand their musical interests by attending two live performances this semester. Venue You may choose any musical performance on- or off-campus, but look for opportunities outside of your usual listening interests. Remember this course is designed to expand the music you hear and the way you think about it. Please be respectful of the performance environment and the hosting institution. Observe the behaviors of those around you and be sensitive to those around you. Expectations You must attend the entire event. You cannot attend a chapel or church service for this assignment. If you only attend half of a concert, you will only receive half the points for the assignment. You may attend performances with friends or family, but your review must be entirely your own work. Your review should contain the following: ● Describe the event. ○ Is it a formal concert? Informal performance? Religious service? ○ Does the venue impact the performance in any way? ● Describe the performer(s). ○ Are they students? Professionals? Volunteers/amateurs? ○ If it is a small group of musicians, describe the instruments involved. ○ If it is a large group, what type of ensemble it is (band, choir, orchestra, etc)? ○ Do the performers interact or communicate with each other during the performance? ○ Are there a variety of performers? ● Consider the audience. ○ Is the audience participating? Interacting? Passive? ○ How big is the audience, and does that impact the performance? ● Discuss the music. Pick at least 2 pieces to talk about in detail. Use terms and concepts from class whenever possible, particularly from chapter 1. ● Include your personal observations and reactions. Did you enjoy the music? How did it make you feel? Why?Format ● The reviews must be typed and submitted via Canvas. ● Proof of your attendance (program, ticket stub, photo, etc) must be uploaded with the review(make same document as your typed review). ● Double-spaced, 12-point font, 1-inch margin on all sides, no more than 3 lines of heading ● Length: 2 full pages Due Dates Review may be submitted at any time, but be sure to complete one by each of the dates indicated in the syllabus. Remember, no late work is accepted.
