MCM 206 INTRODUCTION TO WRITING FOR MASS MEDIA

Professor: Dr Michael Bourk

Assignment 1 (10%) – Newspaper Story

Due: Thurs. April 8, 4 pm (Week 6)

INTRODUCTION

Once a writer has gathered the information necessary to begin a story, he or she must decide on a structure of the story. The most common structure for writing news stories is called the Inverted Pyramid.

The Inverted Pyramid structure concentrates the most interesting and important information at the top of the story. This helps readers identify if the information is what they need or want and if they wish to engage in reading the story fully.

TASK

Write a newspaper article about GUST for a daily newspaper.

Your newspaper article should include the following:

• Headline – abstracted sentence containing five to ten words that convey a complete thought.

• The lead paragraph – is the focal point of the basic news story. It is a simple statement of the most important information of the whole story usually addressing who, what when and where (possibly How and Why) elements.

• The second/third paragraph – puts the story in a context by providing additional information.

• The body of the story – adds detail to information that has been introduced in the lead and the first two or three paragraphs.

• Quote – reinforces the information that has been presented previously. It adds life to the story. You should include at least ONE indirect quotes and ONE direct quotes in your article. However, your story should not be simply a compilation of quotes.
