Impromptu Speech

Impromptu Speech

The Final:  An Impromptu Speech

Before you turn in the final, go back and make sure you have completed all the previous assignments for this class. If you turn in the final and you have uncompleted assignments, the final will not be graded, as per the syllabus. If, for any reason, you turn in your final after the due date you may receive an “I” for incomplete for the semester, that is, if you have already completed all the other assignments for the class.

An Impromptu speech should be a speech that is off the top of your head with no preparation. In a class setting, you would walk to the front of the class, the instructor would ask you a question on a common knowledge subject from a list that you would not get to see before the assignment, you would have a few seconds to think it out, you would begin speaking and answer the question in the form of a speech off the top of your head. Of course, we cannot do that in this situation.

These are the instructions for the Impromptu speech. Read them carefully and follow them closely. The closer you follow them the better grade you will receive. If you have any questions email me, I will respond quickest to email.

It needs to be no shorter than 60 seconds (one minute) and no longer than 90 seconds. I will not watch past 90 seconds. Just submit a video of this speech you do not submit a written form for this speech.

It needs to be in the structure of a speech. If you do not follow this structure you will lose points. The grading will be on the structure as follows.

Intro

            Attention getter

            Subject

3 main points one word each

Body

            1st point

2nd point

3rd point

Conclusion

            3 main points briefly recapped

            Subject restated

            Attention getter used for clincher

Let me give you an example.

If you got the question: “What are your 3 favorite colors and why are these your favorite 3 colors?” It might go something like this:

Every day I walk to get some fresh air, I like to go to the civic center in the afternoon and walk along the lake around the time the sun is setting. I look at the sky and see the thousands of colors in the sunset and I say if I had to pick 3 colors that were my favorite what would they be? Red ,green and blue.

Red because…(one sentence)

Green because…(one sentence)

Blue because…(one sentence)

Briefly recap 3 main points

Restate subject

Clincher: So every day I walk to get some fresh air, I like to go to the civic center in the afternoon and walk along the lake around the time the sun is setting. I look at the sky and see the thousands of colors in the sunset and I say if I had to pick 3 colors that were my favorite what would they be?

Pick one of the questions from this list of questions below, you will notice they are couched in threes to help you with the structure. Of course, this cannot be truly impromptu because you can look at the questions and choose one you like, but it’s the best we can do in this situation, so try to be as honest as you can, challenge yourself and go with it.

Do not start your speech by repeating the question for your attention getter, if you repeat the question at the start of the speech that will be the subject of the speech, you will have skipped the attention getter and you will lose points.

Impromptu Questions (pick one)

1.       If you had 3 wishes what would wish for and why would wish for these 3 things?

2.       What was the best vacation you have ever been on and 3 reasons why it was the best?

3.       What is the best animal for a pet and 3 reasons why it is the best?

4.       If you could have any 3 super powers what would you pick and why would you pick these 3 super powers?

Upload your video to Moodle, it is short and should fit on Moodle, 60-90 seconds, if it will not fit, post it on YouTube and email me the link.

When you frame your video, make sure you are standing and I can see your hands and arms not just your face.

The best of luck with this and all of your other finals.
