Compare and Contrast I. Assignment – This will be a three to five page compare and contrast essay discussing the differences and similarities between two articles on the same topic. It should be organized in MLA format, twelve font, double spaced. The final draft must be submitted to turnitin.com no later than 11:00 PM on 4/4/2021. The finished draft only, must be submitted to turnitin.com. The grade for this assignment will be 15% of the final grade. Any paper not successfully submitted on time as detailed in the syllabus, will result in the grade reduced by twenty points. There will be no exceptions. Late papers will be accepted as designated in the syllabus. Target Dates: 3/15/2021 – Third essay assignment will be listed and discussed in class. 3/16/2021 – Select and read the two chosen readings. 3/17/2021 – Outlines worked on in class, and due in turnitin.com by 11:00PM on 3/21/2021. 3/24/2021 – Rough draft worked on in class. 3/31/2021 –Rough drafts in class for peer editing. 4/4/2021 – Final draft due in turnitin.com by 11:00PM II. Objectives – Students will engage in the writing process, including drafting, revising, editing and proofreading, considering clarity, purpose, audience, and style. Students will understand that multiple drafts enhance the final written product. Students will work with other students to provide feedback, critiquing the work of others and revising based on the suggestions of others. Each student will develop an awareness of the value of collaboration in the writing process. Students will utilize relevant grammar, mechanics and style. Students will practice academic honesty and avoid plagiarism. II. Steps – This is a three to five page essay comparing and contrasting two very different articles on the same topic. Within the framework of each article students must evaluate who the author is, what audience is each article being written for, and the purpose for writing the article. Each student must locate two articles about the same or similar topic. One article must be from an academic source, and the second article can be from a more general source, such as a newspaper or magazine. Looking at the structure of each article, compare and contrast the language, reference conventions and voice the author uses for the intended audience. Look for the reasons the author chose a particular language or level of vocabulary in his or her writing. Remember, the average newspaper is written at about the seventh grade level. To accomplish this task, students are encouraged to make use of the university’s library databases. Students must avoid online internet sources for the scholarly article. Using such sites as a newspaper or magazine site is acceptable. The articles must be from two different sources. Also, both articles should have the name of the author, and if possible, the credentials of the writer.To be clear, I am not interested in a summary of each article. The two articles must be evaluated in terms of: The knowledge of the authors on the subject discussed. The level of the language used. Validation of research used in each article. Intended audience each article is written for. Organization of each article. References Purpose of each article. III. Evaluation – The factors that will enhance the final grade will include: Logical organization Creativity of subject Editing which reflects careful attention to grammar, spelling, punctuation, and word usage Correctly formatted (MLA format) Clear thesis statement.
