Discuss the potential impacts this will this have on U.S. and global healthcare systems.
Directions

The company you work for is expanding internationally in the near future. A team of employees, which you are a part, have been given the task of evaluating one developed (not the U.S.), one emerging and one developing country for possible expansion. You will pick three countries this week, using the Dow Jones Indexes, and begin the process of evaluation. Choose three countries in which you have an interest – do not focus on finding the best choice (remember there is an entire team doing the same process on other countries). There is every possibility that by the end of the process (i.e., the end of class) your country recommendations will be not to chosen for expansion, and that is fine. We are completing our due diligence on all the choices at hand.

This week you will look at the political, legal and technological ramifications of your three countries. You will write up, for each country, all the pros and cons of the choice of each country based on your readings of the first three chapters of your text, the CIA World Factbook and the AIB Global Edge, plus other research from other sources. The expectation would be for a minimum of two pages per country. You will follow APA (6th edition) formatting (no abstract is required for this milestone) with title and reference pages, indented paragraphs and a minimum of four APA formatted references and associated in-text citations. This information, and that of the following LPs, will become part of your final project artifact.

Advocating for Public Health Policy
Imagine that you have been chosen to represent a public health advocacy group as they begin a campaign to get legislation related to a health issue passed in your state legislature. You have been tasked with the role of presenting a proposed policy to the legislature and advocating that the legislature vote for the policy. You have been told that you will have 10 minutes to present to the legislature. Your presentation should be informative, but also persuasive. The legislature will need to make a decision about whether or not to vote for the policy based on your presentation. Your presentation should be structured exactly as if you were “live” in front of the legislature advocating for them to adopt the policy you are proposing.

For your assignment, you will need to select a public health topic of interest to you (you are encouraged to choose one related to your academic major or intended field of work) and a public health policy related to addressing the topic. You may select an actual proposed policy or create one that you think would effectively address the topic. Your presentation should provide enough information about the topic and the proposed policy that a reasonably educated legislator should be able to make an informed decision. Be sure to consider the various questions that a legislator might have about the issue and proposed policy, such as long-term costs and benefits, potential effects on business and industry (especially those that support politicians’ campaigns), and how the policy will support the health and productivity of state residents.

For this assignment, you should create an approximately 10 minute presentation* that addresses each of the following points:

Discuss the public health issue that your proposed policy is intended to address. Questions to consider:
Who does this health issue affect?
What is the impact of this health issue on the community?
Why does this health issue need to be addressed?
Explain the proposed public health policy. Questions to consider:
Who will be affected by this policy?
How will this policy address the health issue?
What will change by enacting this policy?
Evaluate the impacts of the proposed policy. Questions to consider:
What are the costs and benefits of the policy?
What are the risks of enacting or not enacting the policy?
How will the lives of people who are affected by the health issue change if this policy is enacted?
Create an influential presentation that affects voting behaviors of legislators. Questions to consider:
What information about this policy would potentially affect the voting behavior of legislators from across the political spectrum (eg. conservative, moderate, liberal, progressive; particularly those who might not support the policy based on political orientation)?
What are the most important messages that legislators need to hear about this policy?
How would the constituents of the legislators voting for this policy feel about this policy and a legislator who votes for it?
What information would a legislator need to “sell” the policy to consitutents who were perhaps not in favor of adopting the policy?

Should Mrs. Stewart utilize the emergency room for non-emergent situations?

Should Mrs. Stewart utilize the emergency room for non-emergent situations?

ETHICS

Paper details:
You are family nurse practitioner in busy emergency room. Mrs. Stewart brings her daughter, Paige, in to the ER around 6:30 pm, shortly after she has gotten off work for the day. Paige, who is 6 years old, has been experiencing cold symptoms for the past several days and Mrs. Stewart is concerned that the cough has gotten worse. She had called her pediatrician’s office that day and they stated that they did not have an open appointment for the next 3 days and that if she was concerned she could take Paige to the ER. Paige has is insured through the state Medicaid system and Mrs. Stewart has had difficulty finding providers that accept this insurance.

Paige is taken to the triage center to be screened and is categorized as non-urgent by the triage nurse. This particular ER does not have a separate unit or area for non-urgent or primary care patients.
Mrs. Stewart became upset when she was told that although she could continue to wait for Paige to be seen any urgent or emergent cases that came in would be seen first. She was encouraged to wait for an appointment with Paige’s pediatrician or take her to a community health clinic in the area. She was then provided a list of available clinics. The wait time was likely to be more than four hours and she had to work the next day, she wanted to be certain that Paige was able to go to school the next day.

The triage nurse comes to you to ask if you will take a moment to speak with Mrs. Stewart. She explains the situation and wants you to encourage Mrs. Stewart to take Paige home and wait for her to be seen in a clinic. You are aware of the EMTALA (Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act) rules and know that you must assess Paige if Mrs. Stewart chooses to wait. You are also aware of the difficulties a parent can face with taking time off work for several days with a sick child.

ETHICAL AND LEGAL ISSUES IN HEALTHCARE LONG PAPER ASSIGMENT

For your long paper assignment, you will be asked to write a persuasive paper on a legal or ethical issue of your choice related to the healthcare industry. The topic of the paper needs to be a narrow issue that you can research thoroughly and develop a persuasive position. The requirements for the paper are as follows:

The paper needs to be typed, double-spaced, and written in 12-point, Times New Roman font. The paper margins need to be 1-inch all around.
The paper needs to be 8-10 pages and needs to be written in APA format with citations.
You will need to include a Title, Abstract, Introduction, Body and Conclusion.
You will need to have at least 5 appropriate and credible references. You will most likely find that you will use several more. They can be books, journal articles, legal documents, medical or law review articles, etc. They can all be found online if you would prefer, just make sure you include a reference to the website so that I can find them when I check your citations. You are always welcome to ask me if you are uncertain about a source! (Wikipedia is never an acceptable source!)
The paper must be written in Standard English. This means that spelling, grammar, punctuation, subject-verb agreement, and tense all need to be edited and need to be consistent throughout the paper.

You MAY NOT write a paper on the following topics because we cover them so extensively in the course:

Advocating for legal abortion
Advocating against legal abortion
Advocating for legal euthanasia
Advocating against legal euthanasia
