Case Study Paper 40% of Grade (400 points)
Please give adequate attention to the Case Study Paper and do not leave the research, drafting and proofreading until the last minute. For assistance with this written assignment, please use the excellent resources available through the UNO Writing Center (while particularly IMPORTANT for non-native English speakers, all will benefit): http://www.unomaha.edu/writingcenter/ (Links to an external site.)
Every undergraduate student is required to write a 12-15 page paper and 20-25 pages for Master’s degree students. The assignment is to discuss the overarching theme of this course – international conflict and peace – by examining a case study of a conflict situation. You should define key terms and concepts, provide historical context, present the positions and interests of the different parties involved, and give your opinion on the current approaches or explore possibilities for new and innovative solutions to the problems raised.
Students will be required to submit via Canvas a one-page proposal of the case study paper topic by the date on the class schedule. This outline for your paper is worth 50 out of the total 400 points. This outline should be approximately one-page and answer the following questions: (1) What is the conflict on which you will focus? (2) Who will you interview regarding that conflict? (3) What is the basic outline of your paper? (4) And what resources will you use? (While I am not expecting a comprehensive bibliography at this point, you should have an idea about some of the books or articles you will use.) Please submit proposed paper topics to the instructor by date on the schedule.
Undergraduate students will be required to use at least 10 scholarly sources with 5 peer-reviewed academic journals and 5 books. Masters students will be required to use at least 20 scholarly sources with 10 peer-reviewed academic journals and 10 books. (NOTE: Please check with UNO Reference Librarian to ensure that the articles are actually peer-reviewed. Both undergraduate and masters students are required to interview at least one person familiar with some aspect of the case. Please email instructor for suggestions, if needed.
Students’ Case Study Paper assignment grade will be based upon the following:
- Integration of key concepts (demonstrate clear understanding of key concepts from the course)
- analytical quality (critical thinking, ability to contrast and compare ideas, arrive at conclusions and support arguments)
- assignment focus (meets the required objectives set forth in the assignment)
- presentation (proper citation and consistent style correctly used, clarity, organization, grammar, and spelling)
The final draft must be in MSWord, APA or MLA format, 1-inch margins, 12-point Times New Roman font, and double-spaced. The filename for your paper must be Your Last Name-Case Study Paper [for example: McNamara-CaseStudyPaper]. All papers must be submitted online through Canvas. Please do not email papers. All papers are due by 11:59 p.m. on the due date.
