1.  The figure below is data on the composition of mutualistic endophytic fungal communities in three types of tree peonies (labeled A, B and C).  Each color represents a different fungal genus, and the size of the ‘slices’ indicate the relative abundance of each of those genera.  



a) What tree peony variety has the greatest fungal richness?  Explain.


b) What tree peony variety has the lowest fungal evenness?  Explain.

2.  The figure below shows the results of experiments done studying the plant communities at Puca Glacier in Peru.  Climate change has sped up the melting of glaciers at this high elevation (5000 m) site in the Andes.  Researchers studied the glacial till exposed as the glaciers were retreating. They established plots on the glacial till to look at the effect of nutrients on subsequent plant growth.  They sprayed plots with solutions of melted glacial water containing no additions (control), phosphorus (+P), nitrogen (+N) or nitrogen and phosphorus (+N +P).  Within three years lichen and small plants started to colonize these plots, and the researchers measured the number of plant stems in each plot over four years. 



                                  a) What type of succession is occurring at Puca Glacier?  Explain.


b) Based on the data in the figure, what can you conclude about the role of nutrients in the process you identified in a)?  Please explain using data to support your conclusion, and be specific about the nutrient you are describing.
