A Study Research Conducted on Facebook

Part 2 prompt: As you may or may not be aware, researchers recently published the results of a study conducted on Facebook.  In this study, Facebook users (almost 700,000 of them) saw manipulated news feeds so that either positive or negative information was filtered from the feed for one week and then they monitored the emotional content of posts from those same users. The result: the emotional content of what you see on Facebook manipulates the emotional content of what you post (at least in a statistically significant way).

Discussion Prompt: What do you think of this study? Was it unethical for Facebook to conduct the study without telling people they were part of the research? Do you think such research is valid? Is research like this useful? Why should/shouldn’t research like this be done? Don’t just answer yes or no to these questions, think about them and share your thoughts to those that interest you most.
